Atmospheric coherence times in interferometry: definition and measurement

چکیده

Current and future ground-based interferometers require knowledge of the atmospheric time constant t0, but this parameter has diverse definitions. Moreover, adequate techniques for monitoring t0 still have to be implemented. We derive a new formula for the structure function of the fringe phase (piston) in a long-baseline interferometer, and review available techniques for measuring the atmospheric time constant and the shortcomings. It is shown that the standard adaptive-optics atmospheric time constant is sufficient for quantifying the piston coherence time, with only minor modifications. The residual error of a fast fringe tracker and the loss of fringe visibility in a finite exposure time are calculated in terms of the same parameter. A new method based on the fast variations of defocus is proposed. The formula for relating the defocus speed to the time constant is derived. Simulations of a 35-cm telescope demonstrate the feasibility of this new technique for site testing.

Estimation of Earthquake Damage Through Radar Interferometry (Case study: Bam 2003 Earthquake)

The estimate of the damage caused by the earthquake and other natural disasters in the first days after the occurrence of these events can provide a quick damages assessment and help to manage the crisis. Several methods are available to investigate the extent of earthquake’s damage. Optical remote sensing, photogrammetric methods (UAVs and LIDARs), radar interferometry (InSAR) and field observ...

Isolation of Atmospheric Artifacts in Differential Interferometry for Ground Displacement Detection : Comparison of Different Methods

Radar differential interferometry theoretically allows precise detection of ground motion using radar phase information when a series of radar acquisitions are available. However, coherence loss and atmospheric heterogeneities are limiting factors that can corrupt radar interferograms. Concerning atmospheric artifacts, a classical and simple solution is averaging them out by addition of several...

Measurement and comparison of the temperature-dependence of refractive index of water and Plexiglas phantoms by interferometry method for their use in optical calorimetry

In radiation calorimetry by using laser beams and interferometry setups, variations induced by dose absorption in phantom can be precisely measured. Dose absorption and the induced temperature change result in refractive index variation of the material. In order to be able to measure the low amount of absorbed dose in the phantom, temperature dependence of refractive index of the material must ...

ON THE APPLICATION OF ICA TECHNIQUES ON PolInSAR

The applicability of Independent Component Analysis techniques has been verified using arrays of ERS InSAR interferograms. These interferograms correspond to different acquisition times, so that they contain different atmospheric, different terrain displacements/changes and spurious artifacts. In consequence, the only component that is completely extracted is the topography (defined to be const...

Diagnostics of Dielectric Barrier Discharge at Atmospheric Pressure by Laser Spectroscopic Measurements

Spatial distribution of electron density inside parallel plate dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) is discussed in this presentation by using CO2-laser heterodyne interferometry measurement. This interferometry measurement has been used for low pressure plasmas and applied to DC microplasmas at atmospheric pressure recently. To derive the electron density inside pulsed plasmas like DBD, we used ...
